Srinagar, Feb 23: In Jammu and Kashmir, which is illegally occupied in India, Hurriyat leaders and organizations have condemned the tragic incident of gang rape of Kunan Poshpura by Indian men in uniform in Kupwara district nearly three decades ago.
According to details, Indian troops gang-raped 100 women between the ages of eight and 80 during the siege and search operation in Kannan-Poshpura area of Kupwara district on the night of February 23, 1991.
In their statements issued in Srinagar, the leaders said that the victims of gang rape are still awaiting justice. He further said that Kanan Pushpura gang-rape, one of the worst tragedies in human history, was a prime example of the barbarity of Indian forces in the occupied territories. He pointed out that the tragedy was a testament to Indian-administered and organized violence for their role in the Kashmir independence movement against women.
“Kashmiri women are sexually harassed, tortured and abused during house raids to suppress Kashmiris’ sense of independence.”
The statement also said that India was using rape as a weapon of war and military tactics to punish and humiliate Kashmiris.
Aqib Wani, chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Association, recalled the victims of the Kanonposhpura gang-rape, saying, “Rape is a crime against humanity committed by Indian Army soldiers in Kanunposhpura three decades ago. What was in the circle and no one was there. Punishment is never given. “He added that” for the last three years, the Indian Supreme Court has not even heard the case and so far eyewitnesses have died. “
It is pertinent to mention here that since 1990, 11,234 cases of rape, gang rape and molestation by Indian forces have been reported in IOJK.
